The company was created by Alan in April 2010 when he decided it was time to transfer his over 20 years of practical experience from industry into his own accountancy practice. Often you get accountants saying they have practical experience of starting a business but Alan started with no existing clients and very few local connections but with his hard work and help of the wonderful team he has assembled along the way, the business is the size it is now.
Moving from an industry background into the accountancy practice sector has meant Alan has brought the unique skills he used in manufacturing to the access of the clients of Hemingway Bailey. Not coming from a traditional accountancy practice has meant that all the norms of a traditional accountancy practice have being challenged and has made the practice very open to new ideas and technology.
Alan’s passion is giving clients great management information to enable business owners and managers have the opportunity to make well informed decisions on their business. Professionally he qualified as a Chartered Management Account in 1994, passing all 14 of his professional exams first time and became one of the few CIMA Members in Practice in 2010.
Apart from helping clients as much as he can, Alan is passionate about giving young people as many as opportunities as he can and this philosophy can be measured by how successful the Hemingway Bailey team are. The philosophy of Hemingway Bailey is to encourage growth and development of everyone as much as possible and this involves giving early responsibility for the team when they are ready for it.
Working in the community is important for Alan and he is a very active member of For Entrepreneurs Only where he delivers sessions in schools on entrepreneurship and also speaks in schools for ESH and Inspiring the Future.
Alan and all of the team mentor with Hull Children’s University and this involves helping boost the aspirations of local children to achieve more. This can range from trips locally in Hull to spending a full day in London with children as a mentor with HCU.
Hemingway Bailey believe in apprenticeships as a great way for young people to get a great start on their career and Alan is an Apprentice Ambassador with the National Apprenticeship Service and often speaks in schools and with local employers to promote the benefits of apprenticeships.
Away from work, Alan is a big supporter of Hull City AFC and is on the Board of Hull City Supporters Trust, the independent fans organisation. He is also a keen walker and also takes great pride in his vegetable beds at home.
He lives in Beverley with his wife and son and is very proud to say he can walk into work in 10 minutes which after spending time working in the south east with a bad commute is a wonderful thing to do !
